Steep butte road on docket

Talk about an uphill battle.

The Jackson Hole News&Guide reports this morning that a group that has been trying in vain for more than four years to gain permission from Teton County to build a road on a steep hillside will have another chance to present its case today.

At stake is the ability to offer for sale four approximately 35-acre building sites atop East Gros Ventre Butte, the same elevated landmass at the center of Jackson Hole that includes Spring Creek Ranch and the Riva Ridge subdivision. The owner created these lots by subdividing a 180-acre parcel that does have access that would not require building a road on a slope greater than 25 percent or a variance to habitat mitigation requirements.

However, the new lots, which were created by using the family exemption to state subdivision regulations, cannot be accessed without variances to county development regulations.

Which way do you think the county commissioners should go?
